Mississippi school district's superintendent to retire

April 27, 2021 GMT
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) A school district in Mississippi is looking for a replacement for its superintendent.
After nearly 20 years of service, Lafayette County School District Superintendent Dr. Adam Pugh announced his retirement last week. Pugh said he filed his retirement paperwork last fall but waited to make the final decision, The Oxford Eagle reported.
“We’ve been talking about this, praying about this, for about a year,” Pugh said. “I sent in my retirement stuff in October. I got it back and we’ve just been sitting on it, trying to figure out what to do. About a month ago, I got a call from a company and was just kind of talking and asked would I be interested. … It was kind of like the Lord was opening the door for me and saying, ‘Okay. This is what you’ve been praying for.’” ....

Over the last few decades, intellectual property rules have served as a lethal barrier to the right to access healthcare
Even an unprecedented pandemic can do little, it appears, to upset the existing global regime governing monopoly rights over the production and distribution of life-saving drugs. If anything, since the onset of COVID-19, we’ve only seen a reaffirmation of intellectual property rules that have served as a lethal barrier to the right to access healthcare over the last few decades. The neo-liberal order, under which these laws exist, is so intractable today that a matter as seemingly simple as a request for a waiver on patent protections is seen as a claim unworthy of exception. ....

The IMF has projected an impressive 12.5 per cent growth rate for India in 2021
Global forecasting firm Oxford Economics on Monday revised downwards its India GDP growth forecast for 2021 to 10. 2 per cent from 11.8 per cent previously, citing the country s escalating health burden, faltering vaccination rate and lack of a convincing government strategy to contain the pandemic.
Oxford Economics also said that notwithstanding the likelihood of further mobility restrictions, it expects India s targeted lockdown approach, less stringent restrictions, and resilient consumer and business behaviour to mitigate the economic impact of the second wave.
