Plecker, Walter Ashby (1861–1947) – Encyclopedia Virginia

SUMMARY
Walter Ashby Plecker was a physician and the first Virginia state registrar of vital statistics, a position he served in from 1912 to 1946. Loving v. Virginia, required that a racial description of every person be recorded at birth, while criminalizing marriages between whites and non-whites. Both Greene and Gosar told the press that they hadn’t seen the document and did not endorse its sentiments, after House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy condemned the effort, saying that America “isn’t built on identity, race, or religion,” and rejecting “nativist dog whistles.” ....
