Submitted photos As the weather warms up, local summer camps and organizations are preparing for the return of kids, albeit with reduced numbers due to COVID-19. Camp Onyahsa is ready to return to some level of normalcy this summer. Last year, the camp was forced to cancel its overnight activities, which Director Jon O’Brian believes was the right call by Gov. Andrew Cuomo given the aggregate lifestyle that summer camp espouses.

KATIE FINCH Sometimes learning looks like this â wading through literal mud, or muddling through trying to make sense of our questions. Imagine two scenarios. Its spring and a group of young kids are outside with an adult leader. They had a lesson about animals that lay their eggs in water in the spring. They’ve learned about salamander, frog and toad eggs and are now out to see if they can find any evidence of those creatures. In scenario one, a kid walks up to the pond and says “Are those eggs?” pointing to a whitish clump just under the water.

JEFF TOME There is a famous quote from Lord Tennyson about nature being “red in tooth and claw”. The phrase creates this image of nature as a place where you either eat or are eaten. There is an easily recognizable truth in that statement that is easy to see. We watch animals get eaten all the time. I watched a young Cooper’s Hawk pin a cardinal to the ground in my backyard and carry it away just last week. There were River Otters in Audubon’s pond crunching away on fish. I watched a tiny bird called a Brown Creeper creeping up a tree and getting insects from under the cracks in the bark. A coworker watched a hawk eat a crow this morning.
Feb 27, 2021 The Nature Lab, a new program at Audubon Community Nature Center on Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., gives 4- and 5-year-olds a variety of activities that build skills in the outdoors. Children who have an older sibling in The Outdoor Classroom can be dropped off earlier. During each class, educators provide a host of supplies and activities that are the building blocks for engineering, science, art, physics and math skills. The Nature Lab provides a safe place for children to engage in the most important work of childhood: building, climbing, jumping, balancing, socializing, problem solving, making mud pies, or rolling down hills. With nature as their classroom, in all but the most inclement weather children create, manipulate materials, explore, and experiment as they learn about the natural world around them. Guided mini-lessons help students get ready for classroom settings, learn routines, and develop school-readiness skills.

On Tuesday, March 2, Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development will give families an overview of the process of rearing the pheasants provided free of charge by New York state. Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development is holding a pheasant rearing class for youth ages 8 to 18 in partnership with the Audubon Community Nature Center. Raising Pheasant for New York – Class 1 is Tuesday, March 2, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Nature Center and via Zoom. The workshop gives families an overview of the pheasant-rearing process. Pheasants will be provided free of charge through the state Department of Environmental Conservation and will be delivered the first week of June.
Feb 24, 2021 The Jamestown Community Chamber of Commerce will host its Red Brick Road Virtual Scavenger Hunt, unveiling a series of videos at noon Saturday. Wizard of Oz themed items will appear strategically placed in each of the videos as a visual clue. These items include: Flying Monkey, Oil Can, Scarecrow, Red Slippers, Picnic Basket and Toto, Magic Wand, Lion, Tin Oz sign, one Yellow Brick and one Red Brick. When a viewer sees the clue, they can fill out an online form to enter the hunt. Viewers can enter once for each video. The more entries, the greater the chances of winning. Prize packages include a variety of items donated by local attractions, as well as ShopLocalCHQ Gift Cards from the Chamber of Commerce at $50, $100, and $250.

Audubon Community Nature Center invites area residents to take a morning walk on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 9 to 10 a.m. In the past year, people flocked to both new and familiar outdoor environments. ACNC was thrilled to see the increase of people safely enjoying the outside world and wants to encourage the appreciation of nature to continue. The natural world changes constantly throughout the year. Be sure to dress according to the weather for this outdoor activity that will be canceled if the weather is too severe.
