The Chanting Goshawk

Reflexions: Reading in the present tense
, Ingrid de Kok and Mark Heywood continue to invite established and younger writers and other creative artists to reflect on a text that moved them, intellectually engaged them, frightened them or made them laugh. Our reviewer today is Julia Martin who considers Horizon
by Barry Lopez. In the following two weeks our reviewers will be Jacob Dlamini and Angelo Fick.

One moment from
Horizon, the final work by Barry Lopez, has kept returning to me since the lockdown. It’s 1987 and Barry, my friend for many years, is travelling through Namibia. Somewhere in the Kgalagadi, then the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, he notices a pale chanting goshawk, a predator whose hunting depends on depth perception, in the top of a dead tree:

CRAIG BROWN: A stroke of genius

Rating:
It begins like a thriller. ‘When the storm came in it was unexpected and Thomas Myers was dropped to his knees. The air darkened in the distance. There was a roar and everything went white against him. It had a kind of violence he wasn’t prepared for. He wrapped his arms around his head and lay flat on the ice to keep from being hurled away.’
We are in the Antarctic, 300 miles away from any kind of civilisation. Three men have come to work at Station K for Geographic Information Services: Robert, who is an old hand, and Luke and Thomas, who are novice research scientists. The silence creates its own sound – ‘his ears were ringing from the lack of noise’.

The Eye of the Wolf: Measuring Myself through Death

by Paul Haeder / February 18th, 2021
If I were asked what I want to accomplish as a writer, I would say it’s to contribute to the literature of hope.
— Barry Lopez,
A passing. A death. Moving on. Back to earth. A new journey.
He filled the air with lyrical words and ideas grafted to our role as writers and people living inside and with our natural world. He was steadfast in his role as a naturalist of sorts, but through and through he was a word conjurer.
He came to me when I was young, inside his book about wolves. I was in Arizona jumping the skeletons of saguaros with my 360cc Bultaco and learning the art of passage: working with ministers and laypersons helping Central Americans cross that political line between USA and Mexico.

There’s about a foot or so of snow on the ground with more on the way. The temperature was 15 degrees one morning this week. And we were under a winter storm watch. So, you’d think I’d be reading and fantasizing about tropical places. But I’m one of those people who likes winter. And I like literature involving cold, remote places.
I’ve just finished “Migrations” by Charlotte McConaghy. The book starts off with an ornithologist in Greenland banding some of the last Arctic terns. The novel is set in the future and begins with the words, “The animals are dying. Soon we will be alone here.” Franny Stone is hoping to follow these birds as they migrate south. And she’s hoping one of the last fishing boats will take her there. Stone, a sleepwalking Irish/Australian woman with a mysterious past and a multi-layered backstory, manages to board the Saghani, which is an Inuit word for raven.

Orion Magazine | Writers & Artists on the Influence of Barry Lopez

BARRY, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? You and I have been friends for almost forty years now.
We’ve donned hip waders and walked together in the whitewater of your beloved McKenzie River. We’ve walked the woods and hills of the Goldstream Valley. One snowy afternoon, in the crepuscular winter light, as we hiked up the mountain above Cynthia’s and my house, you told me at length about your idea for a sprawling book that would somehow encompass the whole earth with the same intensity and specificity as
Arctic Dreams. A few years later, while you were working on that book,

Remembering Nature Writer Barry Lopez

DAVID BIANCULLI, HOST:
This is FRESH AIR. I'm David Bianculli, editor of the website TV Worth Watching, in for Terry Gross. Today we're remembering nature writer Barry Lopez, who died of prostate cancer Christmas Day at age 75. He won the National Book Award for nonfiction for his 1986 book "Arctic Dreams" and wrote other nonfiction books about nature and travel, including 1978's "Of Wolves And Men," a study of wolves and their powerful influence on the human imagination. That book was based on his travels through Alaska, but he actually raised two hybrid red wolves at his home in the Oregon woods. Although it was an extraordinary experience, he concluded that wolves don't belong living with people.
