Newland, a citizen of the Bay Mills Indian Community, goes before the
Senate Committee on Indian Affairs for his nomination hearing on Wednesday afternoon. He
prepared an opening statement as part of the confirmation process, highlighting his goals and priorities should he be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
“If confirmed, I will bring that perspective with me to the Department of the Interior. We must help Indian Country build back better after the pandemic,” Newland says in his written testimony. “We must also respond with urgency to the violence against Indigenous women and children. And we must lay the foundation for the next generation of Native children to succeed.” ....

A study released last month provides Alaska Natives with 50 years of data about health trends - an extraordinary wealth of information for those in public health trying to combat the leading causes of death and illness.
While the public health world has been focused on COVID-19 for the past year, the leading cause of death for Alaska Natives for at least the last 40 years has been cancer followed by heart disease and unintentional injury.
Many health risks for Alaska Natives have declined significantly in the past half-century. Infant mortality has decreased, as has heart disease and unintentional injuries. Mortality rates for Alaska Natives with cancer, however, have not changed significantly, and for at least one type of cancer - colorectal or colon cancer -Alaska Natives have the highest recorded incidences in the world. ....
