Lundi Gras - The Making of a New Old Tradition

02/15/2021

There are some old traditions in Carnival. There are also some traditions thought to be ancient, but really are not. One of the latter is “Lundi Gras.” While the practice of Rex arriving by boat on the day before Carnival is an old, but interrupted, custom; the popular use of the term “Lundi Gras” dates back only to 1987.  Rex’s original tradition of arriving by river was discontinued in 1917 when World War I took the fun, and attention, away from Carnival. Except for 1971 when Rex staged a river arrival in honor of its Centennial, the custom was dormant. ....

The Best of Carnival - My New Orleans

My New Orleans

This weekend would have been the march of the Krewe du Vieux. The rowdy krewe’s theme brilliantly matched the world of COVID:“We’ve got no taste.” No group maximizes tasteless as much as KduV. For all of us who do have a taste for the capricious Carnival season, here is my 2021 version of the best of Mardi Gras.

Originally Designed Floats with Esoteric Themes
Comus began it all but no longer parades. Following in the tradition are Rex, Proteus, Hermes, Babylon and, among the super krewes, Orpheus. The early themes often referred to classic literature. In frontier America, the parade themes were some of the few references that many people had to early writings. More than being about catching beads the early parades also tried to be educational. But the beads were good too. ....

Some Good News About Carnival – Finally - My New Orleans

So far this season, finding good news about Carnival has been about as easy as trying to catch a Zulu coconut in a crowd, but every so often circumstances take a fortunate bounce in our direction. Challenging situations sometimes create new ideas that can be lasting and enriching. There are glimmers of that this season.
One is the idea of decorating homes like floats. There have been two problems with conventional parades; there are too many of them and they have moved away from the neighborhoods. On the New Orleans East Bank, where most of the krewes march, all of the parades, except Endymion, are along the St. Charles route. (Endymion is the lone survivor along the Canal Street path.) There was a time when there were parades in Gentilly, along S. Carrollton Avenue; Treme and lower Mid-City. On the Jefferson Parish East Bank, parades once rolled along quaint Metairie Road; now most everything in on the Veterans route. To be fair, there ....

The Presidency and New Orleans - My New Orleans

Joe Biden once spoke at UNO. I know because I was there. As I recall he spoke in the University Center’s auditorium. The room was maybe half full, which was not bad considering that all that Biden was at the time was the Junior Senator from Delaware. Still, he was young, handsome, moderate and perceived as a rising star. The event was sponsored by the university’s Young Democrats. I am not sure what he spoke about that day – the thoughts of junior senators from Delaware did not matter that much. What counted was his presence. Yet, besides his celebrity status there was also sadness to his story. In 1972 he had lost his wife and daughter in a car accident. Biden personified tragedy and triumph. It was the possibility of more triumph that drew the curious crowd there that afternoon. Some even thought that maybe one day he would be President. ....
