BOSTON (AP) — Maj. Fannie Griffin McClendon and her Army colleagues never dwelled on being the only Black battalion of women to serve in Europe during World War II. They had a job to do.
The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was credited with solving a growing mail crisis during its stint in England and, upon their return, serving as a role model to generations of Black women who joined the military.

Maj. Fannie Griffin McClendon and her Army colleagues never dwelled on being the only Black battalion of women to serve in Europe during World War II. They had a job to do.
The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was credited with solving a growing mail crisis during its stint in England and, upon its return, serving as a role model to generations of Black women who joined the military.
But for decades, the exploits of the 855 members never got wider recognition â until now.
The Senate passed legislation that would award members of the battalion, affectionately known as the Six Triple Eight, with the Congressional Gold Medal.

The Women's Army Corps' all-Black 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was stationed overseas and helped sort a backlog of mail within three months' time. After they came home to little fanfare after the war, members of the unit are being increasingly recognized and efforts are now being made to award the battalion with a Congressional Gold Medal.

(CNN) -- Members of the Women's Army Corps' all-Black 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion had to fight racial discrimination, gender discrimination and the war itself during World War II.

Retired Major Fannie Griffin McClendon served in WWII as part of the only Black unit of women,
Chicago Sun-Timesreports. During the war, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was responsible for solving the growing mail crisis during its stint in England.
However, over the decades, the women who served in the battalion, known as the Six Triple Eight, have yet to receive wide recognition for their work. The Senate has already passed legislation that would award the seven surviving unit members with Congressional Gold Medals. But the bill is still awaiting approval from the House.
