Fort Smith allocates $335,685 of CARES Act funding to nonprofit groups

Next Step Day Room is seen Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2021, at 123 N. Sixth St. in Fort Smith. The Fort Smith Board of Directors on Tuesday approved $235,000 in CARES Act funding for the construction of transitional housing for the nonprofit.
FORT SMITH The city is approved to allocate $335,682 in CARES Act money among three nonprofit organizations within its boundaries.
The Fort Smith Board of Directors on Tuesday voted 5-1 to approve the appropriations to Crawford Sebastian Community Development Council, Next Step Day Room and The Arc for the River Valley. The board approved the appropriations after discussion over more than half of Next Step Day Room s money, unprogrammed money in the package and rental assistance in light of the expired Centers for Disease Control and Prevention eviction moratorium. ....

The growing problem of food waste requires creative solutions

You would never imagine that walking through a grocery store would be like walking through a landfill, but that is the journey for much of the produce in the United States.  
Food waste makes up 30% to 40% of the food supply in the United States. It is also  the single largest category of material placed in municipal landfills and represents nourishment that could have helped feed families in need,  according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.  
One common reason food is tossed is appearance. 
Part of our food cost is people go through the grocery store and they want the prettiest apple, and then they think they have to buy organic, which frankly is just a marketing term, said Blake Metcalf, clinical nutrition manager for Baptist Health in Fort Smith and Van Buren.  It doesn t really have any validity from a nutrition science standpoint.   ....
