The ability to fly connected drones “beyond visual line of sight” on automated missions could transform many business operations, experts believe.
Today, if you want to inspect a building site or other installation with a drone you need a pilot standing nearby to keep an eye on the craft at all times and control it over a radio connection.
But, according to John McKenna, chief executive of
sees.ai, a tech company working on how drones can be operated remotely using artificial intelligence, this means that a pilot “has to drive to the site, go through a health and safety induction before flying, and then after flying, pack up and drive back to the office.” ....

Elbit Systems has won a contract to supply Seagull USVs (Unmanned Surface Vehicles) to the Navy of a country in Asia-Pacific.
The contract that is in an amount that is not material to Elbit Systems, will be performed over a 17-month period, the company said Wednesday.
Elbit added UAV capabilities to its Seagull USV last July by incorporating Skylark C drone. With a takeoff weight of 15kg, the Skylark C provides a visual feed transmitted to land-based control units. The addition of a UAV also extends the Seagull operator’s line of sight. ....

WASHINGTON: The Navy plans to install hypersonic missiles on its troublesome Zumwalt destroyers, after Congress gave them the green light to start studying the move in the 2021 budget.
Multiple Navy officials said this week they’re diving into the effort, even though the USS Zumwalt, the first of the three-ship class, has yet to deploy despite being christened in 2016.
The timeline for the Conventional Prompt Strike Weapon to be fitted onto the ship isn’t clear, but first the service needs to finish testing it’s own version of the missile, then deliver a report to the Hill. ....
