LG's exit from mobile biz

LG's exit from mobile biz

Corporate Korea should learn hard lesson from fiasco
LG Electronics has decided to pull out of the mobile phone business after recording losses for 23 consecutive quarters. Twenty-six years after LG set foot in the mobile handset industry, the company is withdrawing under the weight of nearly 5 trillion won ($4.4 billion) in accumulated losses. The smartphone sector has enormous strategic value as the hub of a hyper-connected society. All information and communication technology (ICT) devices, increasingly including home appliances and vehicles, are organically linked to and interact with one another through the hub.
The huge potential makes it all the more painful for LG to give up the business. The fiasco shows that just a single critical mistake could drive even a giant player like LG into an irrecoverable setback in this global business war. It should serve as a valuable lesson for other Korean companies too. Along with Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics is one of the two driving forces that have lifted Korea's ICT industry to the status of a global leader. The company was once the No. 3 maker of cellphones, but made a critical mistake of failing to jump onto the smartphone bandwagon in 2007.

Covid-19 impact on ICT trade highlighted
Geneva, Apr 3 (Prensa Latina) Restrictions imposed to curb the Covid-19 impact are today boosting the information and communications technologies (ICT) trade, as reported by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
According to UNCTAD, world ICT goods imports in 2019 shrank 3% compared to the previous year.
But preliminary data for 2020 from Germany, China (Hong Kong) and the United States, three large economies from different regions, show trade growth signs, even a global economic activity fall was perceived as the result of the Covid-19 pandemic, UNCTAD said.
'The pandemic has impacted on digitization, which may have resulted in a significant growth in ICT goods trade despite 2020´s stern economic activity downturn,' said Shamika N. Sirimanne, UNCTAD´s Director of Technology and Logistics.

Autistic people prefer to communicate using the internet instead of in-person.
Researchers from Drexel University's A.J. Drexel Autism Institute collected and reviewed published research about how autistic youth and adults use the internet to communicate and provide a framework for understanding contributions, gaps and opportunities in online autistic communities.
Lead author Elizabeth McGhee Hassrick, PhD, an assistant professor in the Autism Institute, and her co-authors cast a wide net searching across five databases that list studies investigating how autistic people use the internet to communicate. Filtering for specific criteria, they read 32 articles, collected their most important findings and looked for patterns.

Before this financial year closes in June, government intends to distribute 1,500 solar-powered ipads with Internet to poor households to facilitate access to information and home-schooling.
The teachers will be instructing learners from the school-based computer laboratories, which Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) installed in more than 1,000 secondary schools and tertiary institutions to support continued learning while learners are at home.
The UCC executive director, Ms Irene Kaggwa, said the ipads will be procured at Shs3b under the Uganda Communications Universal Services Access Fund, which was introduced in 2010.
The computers have been installed with content for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology for O-Level education with hopes to upload more information in other subjects after evaluating how successful the project will be in three years.
