Councilor Quinton Y. Zondervan points out that an end to the pandemic could come with aÂ surge in homelessness, as the eviction moratorium expires. âThereâs going to be a wave of evictions, of people who couldnât afford to pay their rent. Itâs a horrible disaster waiting to happen,â he says. â[It will] disproportionately impact Black and Brown community members . We canât go back to normal,â he adds. âWe have to [do] better, because normal was unjust.â
The day before a Cambridge City Council meeting in February, John Chute was preparing his notes.
Chute, who is now 40 years old, has lived in Cambridge his whole life. Until June 2020, he was unhoused for about seven years. As he prepared his notes for the meeting, he thought of the many people he knew who didnât have a warm place to stay in the harrowing week ahead. As temperatures in the Northeast remain unforgiving and Cambridge residents bundle up, need is on the rise among the cityâs homeless population â and the situation is only worsened by the pressure to de-densify shelters during the pandemic. Fortunately, the city has finally heard and listened to the oft-ignored calls of the people living on its frigid streets: Prompted by local organizers, including Harvard student activists, the Cambridge City Council voted earlier this month to rent non-congregate homeless shelter space from the New England School of English. ....

Facing Pandemic Challenges, City Council Moves to Curb Spread Among Unhoused Residents | News

Cambridge City Councilors passed a proposal to rent non-congregate housing for the cityâs unhoused population and received an update on the Covid-19 vaccine rollout during a Wednesday meeting.
The council plans to rent space from the New England School of English as non-congregate housing during the pandemic. Non-congregate shelters provide private, single rooms for each guest, whereas congregate shelters house guests in one common space. An executive order from the Biden administration promises states 100 percent reimbursement for the opening and operation of non-congregate shelters and other spaces through September 2021.
Last weekend, housing advocates distributed flyers to more than 1,200 Cambridge households in a campaign to raise awareness and rally support for the policy. ....

Housing Advocates Urge Cambridge Residents to Endorse Non-Congregate Shelters at Upcoming City Council Meeting | News

In advance of the Cambridge City Council meeting on Monday, a group of housing advocates distributed flyers to more than 1,200 households on Sunday urging residents to give public comment in support of ânon-congregateâ shelters.
The Council will vote on Monday on a policy order instructing the city to âinvestigate renting spaceâ from the New England School of English to aid people experiencing homelessness. Project Right to Housing â the event organizers â coordinated the âLit Dropâ Sunday to encourage Cambridge residents to support the policy by attending and speaking in favor of it during the Council meeting.
Project Right to Housingâs mission is to support and create awareness about ongoing efforts led by other housing advocacy groups in the city, according to Piper W. Winkler â21. Winkler, one of the groupâs organizers, is also the co-chair of Harvard College Young Democratic Socialists of America. ....
