(Bloomberg) The EU urged the U.K. to come clean about its exports of vaccines, amid an increasingly terse dispute where the bloc accused Britain of having an export ban.
“It’s important we know what’s happening in the supply chain,” said Joao Vale de Almeida, the EU’s ambassador to the U.K., speaking on ITV’s “Peston” program Wednesday evening. “This exchange has put that on the table,” de Almeida said, referring to European Council President Charles Michel’s earlier claim that the U.K. isn’t sending any vaccines overseas. ....

(Bloomberg) The European Union has exported 34 million Covid-19 vaccine doses to other countries, a figure that shines a fresh light on a bitter dispute between world leaders over who has access to the bloc’s vaccine production.

With 9.1 million doses, the U.K. was the largest recipient of EU vaccine exports as of March 9, according to a document seen by Bloomberg. Canada was next, receiving 3.9 million and the U.S., the eighth in line, got 954,000.
Against the backdrop of “vaccine nationalism” accusations, climaxing in a spat between British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and senior figures in the EU, the document reveals that the bloc sent about a million shots to Britain in the past week alone. The U.K. hasn’t said whether any doses went the other way. ....

(Bloomberg) Boris Johnson threatened to suspend parts of the Brexit deal relating to Northern Ireland as a dispute escalated after the European Union’s threat to impose controls on the border in a spat over vaccine supply.
Responding in Parliament on Wednesday to claims he had “betrayed” the province by agreeing to checks on goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the prime minister said he would act.
“We will do everything we need to do, whether legislatively, or indeed by invoking Article 16 of the Protocol, to ensure there is no barrier down the Irish Sea,” Johnson told the House of Commons. ....

European Markets Head for Lower Open on Final Trading Day of the Year


U.K. banks, retailers and home builders were among the stocks trading lower Thursday, with sentiment likely affected by both Brexit uncertainty and further restrictions on public life announced by the U.K. government on Wednesday due to the rate of coronavirus infection.
Year-to-date, the Stoxx 600 index closed down 3.8%, however it was up nearly 11% for the quarter. Looking at individual indexes, the FTSE was down over 14% year-to-date, marking its worst year since 2008.
Meanwhile, the French CAC 40 was down 7%, German DAX up 3.5% and Italy s FTSE MIB down 5.4%. The worst-performing market in the region has been Spain s IBEX, down almost 15% this year. ....
