The COVID-19 pandemic means local Muslims this Ramadan can t invite their interfaith neighbors to large celebratory meals to break their fast each night, but area faith leaders say they ve found other ways to build connections with the community.
Ramadan, which begins Monday, April 12, is a holy month during which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Community iftars the meals that break fast are a way to invite others to learn more about Islam and build bridges through eating together, said Imran Malik, spokesman for NOOR Islamic Cultural Center, a mosque in Hilliard. The pandemic has restricted some activities, Malik said. But it has replaced them with other forms of acts of kindness and acts of spirituality.

LORAIN, Ohio â After two single mothers were killed in a Lorain home invasion in mid-February, the Lorain County Interfaith Association is sharing its efforts to combat gun violence and violence against women.
Faith-based leaders and elected officials denounced these acts of violence in a Tuesday press conference.
Abril Mills and Jerhonda Edwards, both in their late twenties, were ambushed and shot to death in a home invasion on February 13, according to Lorain police.
âHow in the world can you go to another human being s home without impunity and knock on the door, go in a door and shoot them,â Paul Hasan said.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. The BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation is giving $250,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee to help meet the needs of community members affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This gift provides additional support following the $500,000 the foundation awarded to Second Harvest in March.
Food banks across the state have been facing increased demand since the onset of the
pandemic, as many Tennesseans turn to them for support. While many organizations have been able to sustain operations throughout 2020, donations are leveling off and the beginning of 2021 remains uncertain.

The BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation is giving a total of $1.75 million to six Tennessee food banks to help meet the needs of community members affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This gift provides additional support following the $3.25 million the foundation awarded to these food banks in March, bringing the total to $5 million in 2020.
