After bringing together nearly 2,000 students from 50 countries for the online course “Diversity in News and Newsrooms,” the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin will hold the First Latin American Conference on Diversity in Journalism on March 26 and 27. The event is completely free and online, with the development of two sessions a day on topics such as Gender, Sexual Orientation, Racial and Ethnic Issues and Disability. Registration is open and those who attend the four sessions (offered in Spanish) will be able to receive a free certificate of participation. JANESVILLE Local artisan Paquita Purnell was packing up a minivan Tuesday with the last of her wares after she pulled out of her vendor space at Best of Janesville Vintage Mall. The incident happened Saturday during the busy Vintage Shop Hop. It has drawn fire on social media from tenants and customers who say mall owner James Flister took too few steps to publicly apologize for the vendorâs displays, which customers and vendors say are racist. Tenants also claim Flister threatened to evict at least one of his mall tenants after the person spoke out against the displays. On Saturday, vendors at the Best of Beloit Vintage Mall in South Beloit said they spotted a booth that displayed two paper fans depicting caricatures of Black people with distorted facial features and unrealistically dark skin. ....

Keep Critical Race Theory out of Health Care Commentary The Lancet the world’s oldest medical journal touts its mission as promoting “the best science for better lives.” Unfortunately, its current editors have steered the venerable publication into politically progressive ideological waters that have no relationship to “science.” Most recently, it published a full-bore battle cry to impose “critical race theory” into health care. Critical race theory (CRT) claims that everything in Western society is irredeemably tainted by the bigotry of “whiteness.” Hence, all our institutions and traditions are irreparably polluted by past and continuing “institutional racism.” Remediation isn’t sufficient. Mitigation only puts a bandage on the cancer. The only true cure is to demolish everything that has come before and rebuild from the ground up along “antiracist” lines. ....
