How crowds affect the performance of discriminated groups | VOX, CEPR Policy Portal

Sports events are a unique public display of emotions and frustrations. In football, the noisy support of spectators is an integral part of the ‘beautiful game’, as each side attempts to intimidate the other and cheer their team to victory (van Ours and van Tuijl 2010). As a mentality of ‘us’ vs ‘them’ sets in, however, support for one’s team often turns into a language of disparagement and insult against the rival, which can rapidly descend into discriminatory and racist behaviour.
The problem of racism in football is well known, but it persists largely unabated. The insults received by black players on the English national team after the recent UEFA European Championship final are only the latest example of a deep-seated problem (Barnes 2018, Giuffrida 2019, Bassam 2020, Sky UK 2021). While it goes without saying that fighting racism in football is a moral imperative, little is known about the impact of racial harassment on t ....

Gender Advocates And House Progressives Outline Biennium Priorities

3:39
Vermont Legislators are proposing and committees are reviewing bills with a focus on the budget and the impact of the pandemic. Numerous groups including the House Progressive Caucus are lobbying legislators in a virtual world to address their priorities.
The House Progressive Caucus recently outlined its priorities for the biennium, focused on equity in policy and response to the pandemic.  Caucus chair Selene Colburn of Burlington says all their priorities have a common theme as the pandemic amplifies societal inequities.  “While we as a caucus believe we need to be thoughtful we also believe now is not the time for holding back on addressing the roots of these inequities. The legislature must support bold transformative policies to make change rather than try to restore a status quo that left so many Vermonters behind. We can’t hesitate to do too much because of the pandemic. The pandemic asks us to step up and do more in this moment not less.  The Vermont P ....

Poway students are calling for unity after school district officials said there have been some incidents of racial or religious harassment on Poway campuses since last week’s presidential election.
Some schools have held assemblies and activities to promote diversity, and Poway High School held a unity rally on Friday in response to an uptick in bullying.
Starting at 6:45 a.m., more than 100 students and staff members met before class to share their concerns and offer support to students who have been targeted because of their race or religion.
“The focus of the message was celebrating diversity in the midst of some of the divisiveness that was happening,” said Christine Paik, spokeswoman for Poway Unified School District. “Some were talking about being kind and how to stand up for others if they see any bullying or harassment.” ....
