Learning from past mistakes and moving ahead in the wake of the Albanian elections

In the first days of this week after the election results were announced, I conducted a computer exercise, dividing the result of each subject in each county and listing the quotients who correspond to the MP mandates won. In other words, I applied the D’Hondt formula, which was named after a 19th-century Belgian mathematician, and is commonly used around the world to distribute mandates. (I was not doing what was on every portal)
I was imagining what if the electoral code had not been changed unilaterally by Edi Rama last autumn and that the Democratic Party and Socialist Movement for Integration were both competing within the United Opposition coalition, but each with its own list. The result of this exercise surprised me. In five constituencies the opposition received one more mandate than it currently has in Tirana, Durres, Berat, Vlora and Gjirokastra. With this result, the Socialist Party received only 69 seats and the United Opposition, 68. The kingmaker remained the ....

On 25 April, Albania held elections for its unicameral chamber of parliament, which is comprised of 140 seats. The breakdown of the vote for the parties that secured representation is as follows:
-
-

The result reinforces the position of Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government, which won its third consecutive term while also safeguarding the absolute majority it secured in 2017. This is likely to be strengthened further by PSD, which won two additional seats, but whose US-blacklisted leader Tom Doshi immediately resigned his mandate in order to facilitate cooperation with PS. ....

Albania's Socialists seek to impeach nation's president

May 3, 2021 at 8:12 pm
TIRANA, Albania (AP) Lawmakers from Albania’s governing left-wing Socialist Party have started an impeachment process against the country’s president, who they accuse of violating the constitution during the last election, one of their leaders said Monday.
Taulant Balla, the Socialist parliamentary group leader, said 50 Socialist lawmakers have asked parliament to launch an investigation after determining that President Ilir Meta “before and during the electoral campaign committed actions that run counter to the country’s constitution.”
During the April 25 electoral campaign, Meta accused the left-wing government of Prime Minister Edi Rama of running a “kleptocratic regime” and bungling its pandemic response. Meta accused Rama of concentrating all legislative, administrative and judiciary powers in his hands. ....
