DETROIT A Hartland Township man pleaded guilty Wednesday to plotting with several others to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, securing the first conviction in a high-profile case involving violent extremism in Michigan.
Federal prosecutors revealed new details early Wednesday hours before Ty Garbin, 25, pleaded guilty in front of U.S. District Judge Robert Jonker in Grand Rapids. The kidnapping conspiracy charge is punishable by up to life in federal prison and Garbin will be sentenced July 8. ....

LANSING, Mich. – One of the men charged in connection with the domestic terror plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer revealed many of the unusual and disturbing details of the scheme as part of his guilty plea.
Ty Gerard Garbin, 24, of Hartland, agreed to plead guilty to an indictment that charges him with kidnapping conspiracy. In return, Garbin has agreed to cooperate with officials as they continue investigating the case.

Garbin, 25, is expected to enter the plea Wednesday, Jan. 27.
He faces up to life in prison and forfeiture of property connected to the kidnapping plot.
Five others await trial in federal court while another eight face charges in state courts.
Garbin will be the first to enter a guilty plea. He has agreed to cooperate with state and federal authorities investigating the kidnapping plot.
Under the agreement, filed Wednesday, federal prosecutors will not add additional charges, including conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction and possession of unregistered weapons and destruction devices, court records said. ....

A group of Santa Rosa County residents want to rename the Navarre Beach Causeway after President Donald Trump.
During the public forum at the Dec. 10 Santa Rosa County Commissioners meeting, resident Sam Mullins asked the board to consider discussing the idea of renaming the bridge and even voting on it at the next meeting in January, which the board decided against.
“I’m not prepared to bring this to an agenda item,” said Chairman Dave Piech. “This is a big decision on a bridge that needs to be replaced in the next eight to 10 years. I’m not closing the door to it … but I personally feel this county has a lot more issues to deal with right now.” ....
