S-2-hydroxyglutarate keeps endothelial cells in a dormant state, reveals study

S-2-hydroxyglutarate keeps endothelial cells in a dormant state, reveals study
The inner surface of blood vessels is lined by a wafer-thin layer of cells known as the endothelium, which forms a crucial barrier between blood and the surrounding tissue. The single-layered cell structure promotes the exchange of oxygen and nutrients, while simultaneously preventing the uncontrolled leakage of blood components.
Only when the metabolic needs of the surrounding tissue increase, e.g., during growth, wound healing or tumor development, do endothelial cells abandon this stable cell association in order to divide and form new blood vessels. The signals that trigger this activation have been throroughly studied. Previously, however, little was known about how endothelial cells maintain their stable resting state. ....

Risk of blood clot higher after COVID-19 than vaccine

National
April 16, 2021
LONDON: The risk of developing a blood clot after having COVID-19 is eight times higher than after being given the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, according to a study by Oxford University, foreign media reported.
Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) occurred in 39 in a million COVID-19 patients, compared with about five in a million people given the AstraZeneca jab.
In the study of over 500,000 coronavirus patients, the risk was reported to be around 100 times higher than normal after infection. Numerous countries have limited use of the vaccine to certain age groups or paused its rollout following reports of very rare cases of blood clots. The UK s medical regulator has said the vaccine is still safe and effective but has limited its use in those under 30 as this age group is less at risk of becoming seriously ill with coronavirus. ....

BLOOD DONOR: Oklahoma Blood Institute needs donors to meet demand

The state faces a desperate need for blood. That’s the message from the Oklahoma Blood Institute. The agency said hospitals are using nearly 10% more blood than before, driving up the need for more donors. “We’ve talked to a lot of our hospital partners and they’re seeing a lot of traffic in their operating rooms,” said Dr. John Armitage, president and CEO of the Oklahoma Blood Institute.Armitage said the organization has seen an increase in blood demand for about six weeks. He partly attributes this to a feeling of confidence many people have after getting vaccinated that allows them to get surgeries they put off last year. What about being vaccinated and giving blood?“If you’ve had the vaccination, you can certainly give with us. There is no deferral,” Armitage said. Being vaccinated is not a requirement to donate. Oklahoma Blood Institute recommends holding off until a donor feels fine if they’re feeling sick. Oklahoma Blood Institute says donating blood is ....
