Totty the Englishman
Among them was Charles Totty, an Englishman who in 1896 moved to Madison to work on the Twombly estate (now home to Fairleigh Dickinson University). Totty, then 23, eventually opened his own greenhouses, operated a retail store in New York City and sold throughout the region through a mail-order catalog, according to his New York Times obituary. To promote it all, he organized the first of the city’s long-dormant International Flower Shows in 1913.
Totty grafted his own specialty Australian chrysanthemums and tea rose hybrids and sold them to Rose City s growers. Among them was Joseph Ruzicka, Coultas’ grandfather. Ruzicka ran a 65,000-plant greenhouse through Madison s most productive years. ....

Noe Pond Club in Chatham Township has sold and members mourn

A tiny, pristine swimming hole that has played a variety of significant roles in the lives of Morris County residents since before the American Revolution may finally give way to development.
The family owners of the Noe Pond Club informed members last month that the property on Southern Boulevard in Chatham Township has been sold to new owners and all operations there will end.
For members past and present, the news that the club will close after 65 years came as a shock.
It was pretty devastating to find out Noe Pond was going to a developer, given the legacy, the history and the environmental aspects of the property, said Chatham Township Deputy Mayor Tracy Ness. ....
