Commissioners Consider Schools Budget

The Moore County Board of Commissioners reviewed a proposed new framework for school funding on Tuesday that would allocate a per-pupil calculation for the upcoming fiscal year.
The $32.5 million local budget request covers the associated costs with projected enrollment growth in the district and in charter schools, plus $1.1 million to fund a new salary scale for supporting staff.
“It is time to provide full and certain funding for every child whether they sit in our classrooms or log in from home,” said Board of Education Chair Libby Carter. “It seeks to maintain our programs and staff that make our school system one of the finest in the state. It seeks to maintain (current funding levels), it does not seek to add.” ....

New Juvenile Crime Prevention Council member aims to develop youth

The Courier-Tribune
As a first-generation college student with no financial support, Jaylin Brower began selling marijuana as an answer to his money problems, a choice that would cost him his education at Western Carolina University after a felony conviction.
Brower, 25, born in Ramseur, would describe himself as an at-risk unaccompanied homeless youth in his teenage years. Under the white painted ceilings of Eastern High School, Brower had multiple opportunities to excel as a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and track.
I was the varsity starter, all-county, and all-conference for two years in our district team, Brower said.  I was then given the opportunity after high school to play football at Western Carolina University. ....

Board inches closer to salary schedule | The Stokes News

The new Board of Commissioners convenes its organizational meeting earlier in the month.
DANBURY The Board of County Commissioners moved closer to approval of a new salary system for county employees during its regular meeting Monday night, signaling it will approve the salary study plan being offered by The Mercer Group, an outside consultant, at its next meeting in January.
Actually implementing the plan, however, may require much more work, several commented.
In short, the plan would assign each county job a pay grade, which would have a minimum salary, a maximum and a mid-point. The Mercer Group’s plan also offers recommendations as to which jobs should be assigned into which pay grade. ....
