Montgomery: Alabama is turning to social media to encourage more people to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The Department of Public Health announced a TikTok contest to encourage young people to get vaccinated before the start of the school year. The contest is for people ages 13 to 29. To participate, contestants should submit a TikTok video showing themselves getting vaccinated or include a creative message explaining, “This is why I got vaccinated.” All videos must tag @alcovidvaccine, #getvaccinatedAL and #ADPH. Winners will be determined based on creativity, originality and popularity measured by the numbers of likes and shares. The videos should be submitted by Aug. 6. Advertising professionals and department staff will select four winners who will each receive a $250 Visa gift card. Winners will be announced Aug. 13 on the @

The literal splash was provided by ongoing rain that stopped just in time for passengers to board in Essex Junction. The festive atmosphere was a backdrop to what Amtrak officials say is the biggest ridership day in Vermont since the Vermonter (previously the Montrealer) began operating in 1995.
Over 600 passengers were scheduled to ride the rails on Monday after the pandemic shut down the service in March 2020. The Vermont service is among the last Amtrak runs in the US to restart.
The Vermonter began its southward route from St Albans. Passengers could buy a regular ticket or get a $1 ticket to go one stop. Amtrak said 59 people were disembarking in Essex Junction, which is the first stop. Passengers were required to wear masks.

Vermont marking return of Amtrak service after COVID

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) Celebrations were held at Amtrak stations across Vermont on Monday to mark the return of passenger rail service to the state.
Both the Vermonter train and the Ethan Allen Express resume passenger service on Monday. The service was suspended last year at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Amtrak offered $1 fares at each Vermont station to include Brattleboro, Bellows Falls, Windsor, White River Junction, Randolph, Montpelier, Waterbury, Essex Junction and St. Albans.
The Vermonter train runs between New York City and St. Albans. The Ethan Allen Express runs between Rutland and New York.
