CHICAGO (AP) — The stranger’s call came when Dianne Green needed it most. Alone in the home where she’d raised four kids, grieving recently deceased relatives, too fearful of COVID-19 to see her grandkids and great-grandbabies, she had never felt lonelier. Then, one day last spring, her cell phone lit up. The cheerful voice on the line was Janine Blezien, a nurse from a Chicago hospital’s “friendly caller” program, created during the pandemic to help lonely seniors cope with isolation. Blezien, 57, lives with her rescue dogs, Gordy and Kasey, in a suburban brick bungalow, just six miles from Green’s two-flat apartment in the city.

If you haven't had one rubbish day in the last year. I mean we all have and if we haven't worried about our own loneliness, we certainly all worried about somebody else who we care about. Mhm. I've always been strong. The provider, the teacher, the mentor and I craved. Yeah. Talk to hook to kiss. I missed that. I talked to my kids on Zune, my grandkids. It's not the same. I think that's the reason I felt so lost and so lonely. And this is all of us. In Disney seemed like the older I get 30, I have so much hope and so much trust in humanity. And then something like COVID comes and slaps all that away. Then you wonder where the good is dan to me. And I think Janine showing up. It's good. You get a little hope. I mean, you don't know. Yeah. I am too many cry. Oh, you're so beautiful. This boy said, hi, I'm Janina. And I'm just calling to check on you. And I said, you know you call me just when I needed to talk to somebody all the civil unrest and to see George Floyd to be cute before eyes and then the pandemic. And it was just more than I could bear at that moment. We became More than just uh what would you say? I think we became really good friends. Yeah, Fried two Turkeys. Uh they dress 50 plates. We talked about the kids and her family. I said call me when they need something. You know, I think Diane helps me as much as I help her. So I give you a lot of credit for for keeping me from feeling isolated too. My Lords Social capital is the fabric that binds our communities together. I have quite a wide portfolio of responsibilities, but I think I get probably 8-10 times as much correspondence on loneliness as I get on anything else. Yeah. Whenever I wear yellow socks now, I wear them proudly because I know that I'm not just representing me. I'm representing a massive group of people who have experienced loneliness. All right. Mhm. Mhm. It's going to require a pretty significant cultural shift. We're a country that for the most part, really value self reliance, independence, picking yourself up by your bootstraps and figuring things out. And we're really not incentivized to reach out to people and tell them that we need help. I called her my angel.
