The term “white supremacy” has received a lot of play lately. White supremacists were prominent among the insurrectionists who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6; the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff attributed the assault to “white rage.” Accusations of white supremacy surrounded the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis as well as the deaths of other African Americans. Vestiges of white supremacy surely animate some of the nostalgia for the “lost cause” of the Confederacy as well as the resistance to renaming milita ....

Confederate statues: House votes to remove them from Capitol


Each state contributes two statues of historically important people to be displayed in Statuary Hall
Any statue removed and not owned by a state would be up to the Architect of the Capitol to address.
WASHINGTON – The House passed
 a bill Tuesday that would remove Confederate statues from the U.S. Capitol as well as a bust of the former Supreme Court chief justice who wrote the 1857 Dred Scott decision that denied enslaved people the right to be citizens.
This sacred space, this temple of democracy has been defiled for too long. We ought not to forget history. We must learn from history. But we ought not to honor that which defiles the principles for which we . stand, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said on the House floor before the vote. It s time to remove those symbols of slavery, segregation and sedition from these halls. ....

Illinois GOP Reps. Rodney Davis, Adam Kinzinger join Democrats to remove Confederate statues in U.S. Capitol


House Democrats in 2020, including (L-R) Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.) and House Majority Leader Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), introduced a bill that would replace the bust of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney in the Old Supreme Court Chamber at the U.S. Capitol with one of former Justice Thurgood Marshall. Taney was the author of the 1857 Dred Scott decision that declared African Americans couldn’t be citizens. The measure passed the House on Tuesday on a 285 to 120 roll call.
