Park City-linked athletes like Ted Ligety, Lindsey Vonn added to Olympic bid efforts


Olympic skiing gold medalist Ted Ligety was named to a board of directors formed by the group pursuing a second Winter Olympics in Utah. Ligety, a Park City native, was among a handful of athletes with ties to the community who the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games tapped for board positions.

The group pursuing a second Winter Olympics in the state on Wednesday boosted the representation of athletes, adding a roster of former Olympians and Paralympians that includes well-known names with ties to the Park City area.
The Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games announced the addition of Park City-linked athletes to the governing board of directors and the larger strategic board of directors. Olympic skiing champion Lindsey Vonn, who lives in Park City, was put on the governing board. Another Olympic skiing gold medalist, Ted Ligety, who grew up in Park City and remains in the area, was selected as a member of the strategic board. Billy ....

SALT LAKE CITY International Olympic Committee leaders named Brisbane, Australia, its preferred bid for the 2032 Summer Games this week, but there was no talk about Salt Lake City or other places pursuing the Winter Games in 2030.
“I would like to emphasize that this recommendation and this decision is not a decision against anybody,” IOC President Thomas Bach said during a virtual news conference held after Wednesday’s monthly executive committee meeting. “This is just a decision in favor of one interested party at this moment in time.” ....

SALT LAKE CITY International Olympic Committee leaders named Brisbane, Australia, its preferred bid for the 2032 Summer Games this week, but there was no talk about Salt Lake City or other places pursuing the Winter Games in 2030.

IOC remains committed to already postponed Tokyo Olympics


SALT LAKE CITY International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach left no doubt Wednesday that the upcoming Summer Games in Tokyo will go on as scheduled despite new speculation that the Japanese government wants to cancel the event due to COVID-19.
We are not speculating on whether the Games are taking place. We are working on how the Games are taking place, Bach told reporters during a virtual news conference following an IOC Executive Committee meeting, promising that Olympic leaders are fully concentrated on, and fully committed to holding a safe Olympics.
Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, who led the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, weighed in via a tweet linking to a Wall Street Journal story that quoted a Japanese Olympic organizer urging U.S. President Joe Biden to back the Tokyo Games going ahead. ....
