July is Disability Pride Month, and the Disabled Rights Action Committee in Salt Lake City is celebrating with a hybrid virtual and in-person arts event.
The Disabled Rights Action Committee was founded in 1990 by activist Barbara Toomer with a mission to demand accessible transportation in Utah.
“She used to say that it s not the people that are disabled, it s the rights that are disabled, said Psarah Johnson, the board chair for the Disabled Rights Action Committee. So the fact that we have a society that isn t accessible, that s the problem.”
Johnson said that it’s thanks to the committee that Utah has one of the most accessible public transit systems in the country. Early members took direct action by parking their wheelchairs on the TRAX lines and having “bus crawl ons.”
KUER Britney Spears fans rally for the pop star at the Utah State Capitol as she heads to court in Los Angeles.
Around 50 people gathered around the Utah State Capitol dressed in glittery-hot pink attire on July 14, to rally for Britney Spears as she headed to court for her conservatorship case in California. It was a part of a nationwide rally for the pop star.
In 2008, Spears was placed under a permanent conservatorship by her father Jamie Spears and lost control of her estate and other aspects of her life. A conservatorship is similar to a guardianship in other states, in the way it gives control to a court appointed guardian to make decisions for someone.

How Britney Spears’ Case Sheds Light On Disability Rights Issues In Utah
The #FreeBritney movement is putting a spotlight on disability rights issues in Utah. It comes as Spears heads to court to fight her conservatorship case, which gives her father control over many aspects of her life, like how she spends her money. Activist Heidi Pomerleau with Disabled Rights Action Committee in Utah said Spears’ case is shedding light on a situation that frequently occurs to people living with disabilities. “Disability right advocates have been working on this and shouting about this for so many years,” Pomerleau said. “What we need now is change at the federal level.”
