Gov. John Carney on Friday, Jan. 15, signed Executive Order #47, activating the Delaware National Guard to assist state and local authorities with activity around the 2021 Presidential Inauguration.
According to the order, the Guard may take proactive or responsive action at the direction of the director of the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), in consultation with the Secretary of the Delaware Department of Safety & Homeland Security (DSHS).
The order was effective immediately and will expire on Jan. 22.
âMembers of the Delaware National Guard have continued to step up â time and time again â to support their communities when that support is needed most. This time is no different,â said Carney. âI want to thank all of our Delaware guardsmen and guardswomen for their selfless service to our state and country.â
U.S. Capitol building, National Mall, surrounding areas
The nation s capitol was quiet Sunday amid unprecedented security measures as Americans braced for possible violence ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.
More reporters and law enforcement members were present than protesters. Barricades blocked any path toward the Capitol several blocks in front of the grounds.
Metal fences standing at least 10 feet high prohibit entrance to the National Mall, as does the presence of the National Guard and Secret Service.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser asked Americans not to come to the capital for inauguration, citing concerns over violent protests and COVID-19.

The entire country is on high alert after law enforcement said there could be violent protests this weekend through Wednesday s inauguration of Joe Biden.
But so far, the scenes at state capitols across the country have been mostly quiet, with more police and media members present than protesters.
That was the case in Dover, Delaware s state capital, Sunday morning. A few police SUVs were stationed outside Legislative Hall, and some of the streets leading up to the building were blocked off. Legislative Hall is surrounded by a 6-foot-tall fence erected Friday afternoon.
