At the World Aviation Festival this week, industry experts have tackled the possibilities which digital holds for inflight retailing and customer service
Airlines risk seeming “old-school” and out of touch to customers emerging from lockdowns with a new digital focus, according to
AOE CEO Kian Gould.
The global lockdowns brought on by the pandemic have accelerated existing trends, Gould believes, bringing new shoppers into the digital realm and heaping pressure on all companies to keep up with the pace of change.
“Even the generation that to us e-commerce people seemed lost to e-commerce,” he explained, “They have started doing more online.” ....

New IATA director general Willie Walsh cites continued airline investments in sustainability initiatives – despite the financial pressure from the global pandemic – as evidence for his confidence that the industry can meet the challenge of cutting its greenhouse emissions.
Walsh’s comments came as reports emerged suggesting the UK Government would shortly announce the extension of environmental laws to cover aviation as part of a range of measures to accelerate its targets on cutting carbon emissions.
Such a move would be the latest example of the increasing pressure on airlines to tackle emissions; governments in France and the Netherlands have already attached green conditions to their bail-outs of Air France-KLM. ....

IATA chief sees airlines 'more cautious' in post-pandemic networks | News

A focus on tackling the mounting debt burden is likely to result in airlines adopting a more cautious approach to building back their networks post-pandemic, believes new IATA director general Willie Walsh.
Industry debt levels have risen sharply as airlines took action to bridge the revenue gap caused by the sharp fall in air travel during the pandemic. At the end of 2020, IATA estimated that airline industry debt levels had increased by more than $220 billion, to $651 billion – a figure that will have increased as carriers continue to burn cash while air travel markets remain largely closed. ....
