AAAS Makes Science Relatable

by: Neil Orman, Andrea Korte
Science helps power our world in so many ways: improving our technology, protecting our health and connecting us to our friends and family around the world.
To help make science more relatable, AAAS programs connect scientists and the public, demystify science and highlight the many benefits that scientific discoveries bring us.
Some AAAS programs create opportunities to start a lifelong interest in science. Among AAAS’ many educational programs is Science in the Summer, which offers free, hands-on summer programming to children to teach them about science through the lens of a subject they are interested in, such as sports or space. Family Science Days, a longtime component of the AAAS Annual Meeting, introduces children and their families to a diverse group of scientists through hands-on demonstrations and face-to-face conversations. ....

Just the Facts: Rachel Owen and MOST Provide Science Guidance to Polarized Politicians

by
Marsha Walton
Rachel Owen earned her Ph.D. in soil science, studying
the impact of a changing climate on wetland ecosystems and landowner perceptions of climate threats. But some of her other skills, as a diplomat and a “science translator,” are just as crucial in helping Missouri lawmakers navigate complicated scientific issues.
Owen is the executive director of MOST, The Missouri Science and Technology Policy Initiative. In 2016, she started the group with two other graduate students to explore what science advising at the state level might look like.
The aim was to make non-partisan experts available to state legislators; to answer questions about the complex science topics crossing their desks. ....

Science for Georgia's Amy Sharma Successfully Connects Scientists and Policy | American Association for the Advancement of Science

by
Laura Petersen
Sometimes, you got to call it like you see it.
“Scientists really suck at talking to people,” says Amy Sharma, the vice president of Science for Georgia, a nonprofit launched in 2018 to increase public engagement with science and science in policy. Don’t worry, Sharma can say that with authority – she’s an entrepreneur, biomedical engineer and radiation physicist. “We certainly aren’t very good at communicating what’s important to someone who is not a scientist. What we find fascinating and interesting often has no everyday relevance.”
Science for Georgia is working to change that by giving scientists tools and opportunities to engage on state issues they care about with legislators. The organization provides workshops to help scientists identify key messages, and how to talk or write about them in a way that will interest the public and policymakers. The group also invites scientists along with them to meetings with la ....

How We Respond showcases stories from 18 communities, including in western Kansas, where farmers have implemented improved water management practices. | Impact Media Lab
On Earth Day and throughout the year, AAAS programs highlight the scientific evidence on climate change – and share how that evidence informs local, state and regional responses to climate change’s effects.
How We Respond is a project launched in 2019 that, through a report and multimedia stories, highlights 18 communities around the country that are incorporating scientific evidence into innovative solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change at the local, state and regional level. ....

Throughout a year when the world’s eyes were upon science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science responded to the COVID-19 pandemic that dominated headlines throughout 2020 with evidence-based research, took steps toward systemic change as the national conversation turned to diversity, equity and inclusion, and pursued a wide variety of activities to advance science and serve society. Although th ....
