When Biosecurity Is the Mission, the Bioeconomy Must Become Government's Strategic Partner | Center for Strategic and International Studies

The Issue
Biosecurity protecting humans, animals, and plants from biological threats is an essential government mission, the importance of which has been dramatically highlighted by the Covid-19 pandemic. The government’s pandemic response has been enabled by the emerging bioeconomy, which provides core biosecurity capabilities that are essential to the success of the mission. The government’s engagement with the bioeconomy has grown in recent years, encompassing a range of agencies with a focus on laboratory and product safety and an emphasis on supporting research and development (R&D). However, the government lacks mechanisms for providing a broader strategic focus that integrates priorities, including biosecurity, in partnering with the bioeconomy. As a result, the government’s engagement with the bioeconomy remains insufficient to support the translation and integration of R&D into the delivery of biosecurity capabilities. The government is often not able to fully c ....

Inside the Secretive Government Unit Saving American Lives Around the World

In a concrete hangar in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico,
Katrina Mayes is working with precision and purpose. Wisps of smoke surround her, wafting off the dry ice she is using to jerry-rig a cardboard vaccine carrier. Her task: to create a vapor phase vent to moderate the temperature of the cooling container from around minus 80 degrees Celsius (for storing Pfizer’s COVID-19 vials) to minus 15 degrees Celsius (to accommodate supplies of the Moderna vaccine).
At 29, the biochemist and virologist has spent much of her professional life indoors, where the U.S. government has entrusted her to handle some of the world’s most lethal pathogens including Ebola, Lassa fever, and Nipah viruses at top-secret Biosafety Level Four facilities. “I shower six times a day,” she tells me. “I’m the cleanest person you’ll ever meet.” Her winning smile and gallows humor mask the gravity of her work, which has involved diffusing poison-laced letters that have been mailed to federal buil ....

Increasing ultraviolet (UV) levels in the environment can decrease the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), reports a new a study published in the journal
PNAS. According to its authors, this suggests that the disease has a seasonal pattern (like all other coronaviruses), and understanding this pattern could help improve global response to the pandemic. They remained politically correct, making sure to note that this observed influence of UV seasonality is modest when compared with social distancing policies and other preventive measures.
