I now feel a total sense of hopelessness and despair (“Net zero action: Cabinet shuns climate laws”, February 10). All sense of urgency to ensure the safety of future generations and biodiversity on this planet is being completely ignored and used as
a political plaything. What can we possibly do, as citizens of this country, to convey this utter despair to our supposed leaders? Anything?
Judy Hungerford, North Curl Curl
Just about every institution – including state governments, business, unions and farming groups – want net zero emissions by 2050 to be legislated. But the Coalition federal government still demurs. Scott Morrison is fearful that the same fate is in store for him that was meted out to Turnbull. ....

One couldn’t ask for a better person for the Australian of the Year gong than well-deserving Grace Tame, the first Tasmanian to receive one (“Change the date, says Grace”, January 26). She is not going to muck around. In the little time she’s been in the public eye, Tame has already said what most of us feel — change the Australia Day date. I can’t wait to hear her views in the days ahead. Congratulations, Grace.
Mukul Desai, Hunters Hill
Delighted to see such an eclectic mix of women who have taken out the top Australia Day honours this year. These women are true embodiment of the saying of Australia’s Patron Saint Mary MacKillop — “never see a need without doing something about it”. ....

Your writer mentions the mystery of the 90 per cent efficacy rate for those people who accidently received a low dose in the AstraZeneca trial, followed by a standard dose ( Gambling on the right vaccine , January 15). No matter why it happens, why not adopt this as standard immunisation practice rather than implement a procedure with only 65 per cent efficacy?
Diana Wyndham, North Sydney
Reluctance to adopt the AstraZeneca vaccine compared with Pfizer vaccine centres around the efficacy disparity - 65 per cent versus 90 per cent in the latter ( Comparing virus shots is tricky, especially at speed , January 15). Although not yet fully understood, a half dose of the AstraZeneca given first by mistake followed by a full dose produced 90 per cent efficacy in phase t ....

International research has only confirmed our opinion of the Morrison government’s tax cuts (‘‘Top-end tax cuts fail economy and boost inequality: studies’’, December 21). This government has always favoured the top end of town and always will. It’s time voters stopped falling for the nonsense. Frydenberg claimed the tax cuts would reward effort and ‘‘encourage aspiration’’, but they will only increase exasperation. The cuts were supposed to protect ordinary workers from ‘‘bracket creep’’, not give them the creeps. ....
