Senate adopts aid-in-dying measure

The bill has triggered some of the most emotional debate of the session.
Legislators shared tears Monday as they spoke about the anguish of losing a loved one. The bill also attracted testimony in committee hearings from patients with terminal illnesses and family members who described listening as a relative begged for help ending their life.
“For those who are suffering unbearably at the end of life,” Democratic Sen. Liz Stefanics of Cerrillos said of the proposal Monday, “it provides a measure of control.”
She is one of five Democratic legislators sponsoring the bill.
But opponents questioned whether patients might be pressured or coerced into suicide, perhaps by family members. They also said the state shouldn’t make it easier to end a life. ....

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham says nearly three-quarters of $1 billion could be lost over the next four years if New Mexico sees even a 10% reduction of oil and gas production due to President Joe Biden s actions to curb leasing on public lands.
The first-term Democratic governor said Monday in a letter to the president that financial losses of that magnitude would have real effects on the state s ability to achieve goals like universal access to early childhood education.
The governor is asking that New Mexico be granted energy transition credit for actions the state already is taking to address pollution and move toward more renewable energy. ....

The New Mexico Senate passed a controversial bill Monday that would allow terminally ill patients who are of sound mind to take their own lives with the aid of a physician.
The bill will soon head to the desk of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who is expected to sign the measure into law once the state House of Representatives, which already has approved the bill, concurs with a number of amendments.
“The governor has been a lifelong advocate for seniors and their independence, as well as for the importance of dignity and respect in making choices about one’s own health and treatment,” Nora Meyers Sackett, Lujan Grisham’s press secretary, wrote in an email. ....
