Kelvin Craig, a 23-year-old former foster child, is not much different than the approximately 700 young adults who age out of Georgia’s foster care system each year.
At age 18 he moved out of his fourth foster home into an independent transition program. Two years later, he decided to pursue a career in computer programming and enrolled at Athens Technical College.
After six weeks, however, he dropped out because he couldn’t get a ride to school. And now he is stuck with a $636 Pell Grant to pay off with no degree and no job. He previously held a series of low-paying hourly jobs in manufacturing, landscaping and working with a land surveying company. ....

Athens dreamers find new hope in Biden congressional bill for pathway to citizenship


Adonahi Meza was 7 years old when he and his sisters were brought to the United States from Mexico, much like 640,000 other undocumented children. Since 2004-2005, Meza has resided in Athens. During Meza’s senior year of high school, he acquired a renewable two-year protection from deportation and eligibility for a work permit and driver s license through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which would allow him to attend Athens Technical College.
Shortly after being sworn into office, President Joe Biden sent a sweeping immgration proposal to Congress. The proposal calls for a fast-track path to citizenship for dreamers, temporary protection status holders and some immigrant farmworkers. For local DACA recipients and undocumented people, this brings forth faith. ....

Jordan Air proud to keep it in the family


And the family business started with a dream. 
Founder Donnie Jordan graduated from Oconee County High School in 1983 and Athens Technical  College several years later. He worked various jobs before starting his own business at age 27. Jordan Air had modest beginnings in 1993 with Donnie working as the sole employee from his carport. He went five years before he drew a salary, lived on a tight budget and didn’t have to borrow much money. 
“I was pretty ambitious,” said Donnie, explaining that the company has outgrown a number of buildings, expanded to five counties and now employs about 85 employees. “You have to have the passion.” ....
