Backdoor Bread granola One of my pandemic hobbies has been leaving home for food. I don’t mean walking three blocks to City Market, but rather driving to Shelburne for eggs or the Roots Farm Market in Middlesex to buy spinach, potatoes and onions. Before attacking me for this heedless waste of resources, consider the efficiency: Sometimes I get a brownie and hummus at Red Hen Baking, down the road from the market.
Consistent with this activity, on Tuesday I drove 10 miles to buy bread at Backdoor Bread in Charlotte. The whole-grain bread bakery is owned and operated by Jim and Lynn Williams, who formerly owned Seven Stars Bakery in Providence, R.I. ....

PAWTUCKET – More than a year after the City Council passed a tax treaty with the owners of Seven Stars Bakery smoothing the path for a new bakery across from Pawtucket City Hall, those owners say they’re getting the gears of their project back into motion.
“We put things on hold when the pandemic hit but have recently re-engaged with the architects and designers,” said Bill Daugherty, who owns the bakery with his wife, Tracy. “We’ll know a lot more in a month or so once the cost estimates start coming in.” ....

Almost three weeks after he became the first person in Rhode Island to receive an authorized COVID vaccine shot, emergency physician Dr. Christian Arbelaez on Saturday received his second dose.
Some things had changed in the meantime. Eight thousand of his colleagues, about half of Lifespan’s workforce, had received their first vaccine dose of the two-dose regimen. That includes colleagues of Arbelaez who decided to sign up because his experience broadcast live on national cable news motivated them. The vaccine was now rolling out in the community, in hard-hit and heavily Latino Central Falls. And on New Year’s Eve, just before the calendar flipped to 2021, Arbelaez turned 47. ....

Not all food businesses have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Those that served the most urgent needs of the public delivery and were set up for the challenge of contactless delivery, did well.
Case in point: Rhode Island s homegrown fresh and fully-prepared meal delivery service Feast & Fettle. The food, healthful and nutritious meals, prepared out of their East Providence headquarters, is packaged and dropped out to customers homes in both R.I. and Massachusetts.
Since launching in 2016 with founder Maggie Mulvena Pearson and general manager Nikki Oliveira at the Hope and Main culinary business incubator, they ve added CEO Carlos Ventura. ....
