Gov. Kim Reynolds announced Tuesday that her state budget calls for a $2 million increase in funding for the biofuels industry, and she hopes to work with the Biden Administration to help the industry further recover from setbacks caused by the pandemic.
Gov. Reynolds spoke at the virtual Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit, an annual event that brings together government officials, industry professionals and activists from across the Midwest to discuss the future of biofuels. She said that her $2 million addition to the $3 million renewable fuel infrastructure program would help to convert gas pumps to accommodate higher blends of ethanol. The program would also receive an additional $5 million from a change in fuel retailer tax credits under Reynolds’ plan, according to an Iowa Capitol Dispatch article. ....

Biofuels advocates urged to tell their environmental story

There’s hope for the beleaguered biofuels industry if government policies and export opportunities bear fruit.
That’s the conclusion reached Tuesday, January 26, at the Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit, which was held in a virtual forum because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Monte Shaw, executive director of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association, described the state of Iowa’s biofuels industry as “battered, but battling for a better future,” during his remarks.
Iowa is the national leader in ethanol and biodiesel production with 42 ethanol refineries capable of producing 4.5 billion gallons a year and 11 biodiesel plants with the capacity to produce more than 400 million gallons annually. ....

Gov. Reynolds plans to build relationship with President Biden to protect biofuels

Gov. Kim Reynolds is looking forward to “building those same relationships” with President Joe Biden and his Environmental Protection Agency staff that she had with the Trump administration to protect biofuels, Reynolds said during Tuesday’s virtual Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit.
Reynolds, a self-described “tireless advocate and unwavering fighter of the biofuels industry,” pointed to EPA small-refinery exemptions granted during the Trump administration as a key challenge to Iowa’s future ethanol success.
With the exemption, a refinery is permitted to avoid blending ethanol into its fuel and therefore reduce demand for Iowa ethanol.
“I will hold this administration and the new EPA administrator accountable for transparent and fair rulings on biofuels,” Reynolds said, “just as I have always done with previous administrations.” ....
