When Mel Gibson was first becoming known as a film actor, he had a lot of obvious things going for him: acting talent, good looks, ruggedness, a charisma that could land on either side of “sly” or “menacing.” In other words, arguably, all the stardom requisites. But he was interesting beyond that, because of the movies he was in. Pictures such as “Mad Max” and “The Year of Living Dangerously” were debatably genre pictures but they had energy and intelligence that was way beyond generic. It seemed also that Gibson had meaningful alliances with the makers of those films, directors George Miller and Peter Weir. Whether it was just happenstance that all these guys were coming up in the Australian film industry at the same time or if Gibson himself was indeed a more-discriminating-than-average film actor didn’t matter; it looked good. And when Gibson made his big-Hollywood move in “Lethal Weapon” he did, although it’s tough to really remember it properly now, play
Some blame the pandemic for the stress and boredom that have led them to buy more cigarettes.

Maria Neuman blames Netflix. “Last night, I blistered through seven cigarettes because I was watching a movie,” said Ms. Neuman, 51, a freelance writer who lives in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. “It’s bad enough that I started smoking again during a pandemic. Now, I’m smoking inside.”
Milo Martin, a poet in Los Angeles, offered fewer excuses. “Being quarantined is a great opportunity to sit around and smoke,” Mr. Martin, 57, said. “It’s an existential exercise to tangibly see yourself breathing.”

Quitting Cigarettes Is a Journey of Discovery. Here s How I (Finally) Did It
Smoking may have lost much of its social capital, but 16% of British men still puff away habitually. How best to stub it out? This is what I ve learnt 14/01/2021
The first cigarette was unremarkable, though no less memorable for that. Late afternoon, a dry autumn day in 1989. Me. James. Was it Rich? No. Must have been Graham. Squeezed between a dense hedgerow and an old stone wall by the church opposite school, we took turns to puff and splutter our way through the first tab of a Benson & Hedges 10-pack. I recall muted laughter, muffled coughs and prodigal plumes of blue smoke. Discarded copies of
Wear a Mask
By this time, after all we’ve seen and everyone we’ve lost in 2020, wearing a mask should be a mark of social responsibility. Because it is. It’s not a hoax. It’s not panic. It’s not being a “sheeple,” and it’s sure as hell not infringing on your personal freedoms. If you think any of those things, you’ve been lied to. If you’ve claimed any of those things, you’re the liar. America lost nearly 350,000 of its own to COVID in 2020; that’s over 1 in every 1,000 citizens of the United States. If that’s not obscene enough to make you wear a mask when you’re in public, then you’re part of the problem. You’ve defected to the side of the enemy. It’s the same as if you had watched the Twin Towers fall on 9/11 and your reaction was, “Well, that Osama Bin Laden has a point.”
