LONDON (Reuters) - Britain approved Pfizer Inc’s COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday, jumping ahead of the rest of the world in the race to begin the most crucial mass inoculation programme in history.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson touted the green light from Britain’s medicine authority as a global win and a ray of hope for the end of the pandemic, though he recognised the logistical challenges of vaccinating an entire country of 67 million.
Britain’s move raised hopes that the tide could soon turn against a virus that has killed nearly 1.5 million people globally, hammered the world economy and upended normal life for billions since it emerged in Wuhan, China, a year ago. ....

The official Sputnik V Twitter account as well as a statement from the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF-Russia s sovereign wealth fund) announced Wednesday that Argentina is the first country in Latin American to officially register the Covid-19 vaccine.
Argentina was the first country in Latin America to officially register Sputnik V. The vaccine was registered under the emergency use authorization procedure and was approved by the regulator, ANMAT, based on the results of Phase III clinical trials in Russia, without additional trials in Argentina, the RDIF statement said. ....

After the new COVID-19 variant was discovered, at least five countries Germany, Turkey, Israel, Switzerland, and Saudi Arabia, suspended flights from the UK.
The United Kingdom reported identifying two cases of another new strain of COVID-19 linked to South Africa on Wednesday, December 23. Like the UK variant identified earlier, the new South African variant of COVID-19 is also adding to the surge in cases of infection, with experts warning the country is probably facing a much larger second wave.
