Women's History Month: Jamestown H.S. student recognized for documentary about first female West Point grads


WILLIAMSBURG Kathryn Miller is a military B.R.A.T., or, “Born Rough and Tough.”
Her father is on active duty and her mother is a U.S. Army veteran. Throughout her young life, she has been a student in eight different schools.
Before moving to Virginia this past summer, she previously lived in Tennessee, California, New York, Alaska, Texas, Florida, Hawaii and Pennsylvania.
“It’s helped me learn how to adapt and make the most of every opportunity because I understand that time is limited,” she said. 
Ever since she was in the fourth grade, Miller has had a passion for video production. While living in Hawaii, she was in a few episodes of the series Magnum P.I., where she got a real sense for what a television set is like. ....

Louisiana student delegate in U.S. Youth Senate Program born to serve


When Grant Wilson Suire was a kid he wanted to be president. Born on the Fourth of July and named after two American presidents, he seemed destined for the Oval Office.
Like other little kids, he thought being president would be cool. By middle school he was paying attention to the actual political process, especially as the 2016 election dominated.
By high school he d matured, noticing  real problems that exist in the world, which only became more apparent in 2020 amid a global pandemic, another contentious election cycle and protests decrying inequality.
My passion shifted from the electoral politics  from the superficial, flashy side  and started focusing more on solving the problems my generation is going to be facing, Suire said. If anyone can fix it, maybe I can; if not, at least I ll know that I tried. ....

Ray Halbritter, the Oneida Indian Nation Representative, CEO of Oneida Nation Enterprises, and a trustee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Museum, has launched Standing Arrow Productions, a privately-funded, independent film and TV production company aimed at increasing the representation and championing the narratives of Native American and Indigenous peoples on screen. Halbritter has already optioned the first book that he will adapt: “The Real All Americans: The Team That Changed a Game, A People, A Nation” by award-winning sports journalist and Washington Post columnist Sally Jenkins. ....

Both Brown and Lyons think these efforts need to start early.
“We want to better understand how can we identify these individuals during the recruitment process so that we can screen them and prevent them from joining the military, and we want to better understand what is it about the military environment that is attractive,” Brown said.
Secretary Austin wrote this is just the first initiative. He closed his memo writing: 
We owe it to the oath we each took and the trust the American people have in our institution.
We asked Lyons what the consequences are if the military doesn’t root out extremism in the ranks. ....
