North Korean Capital Cracks Down on Illegal TVs to Prevent Access to South Korean Broadcasts


North Korea has ordered residents of the capital Pyongang to report the number of televisions in each household to stop them from watching banned shows from prosperous, democratic South Korea, sources in the country told RFA.
In North Korea, access to media from the outside world is strictly controlled, and TVs and radios are manufactured to only pick up domestic channels and must be registered with the authorities. But residents do find ways to access South Korean signals, either by using foreign televisions or modifying domestic ones.
Getting caught during routine inspections with a TV that can pick up illegal signals is a punishable offense. Residents with more than one television hide their illegal TVs during inspections, only to bring them out again to watch Seoul’s latest hot drama or variety show, former residents told RFA. ....

BCB sells broadcast rights to Ban-Tech

Bangladesh Cricket Board sold their new home series media rights to Ban-Tech, a marketing agent for the broadcast deal, for the next two years.
Ban-Tech, who earlier brought the TV rights for the West Indies series in January, was the sole bidder for the deal.
According to BCB sources, Ban-Tech was given the rights after they managed to bid close to the floor price.
“We are happy (with Ban-Tech) as they managed to bid close to our expectation,” said a BCB official close to the development.
“We were expecting USD 19 million (TK 161 crore) and they are quite close to that amount,” he added. ....

AT&T to combine its media assets with Discovery to create new company

AT&T, owner of HBO and Warner Bros studios, and Discovery, home to lifestyle TV networks such as HGTV and TLC, said on Monday they will combine their content assets to create a standalone global entertainment and media business.
Discovery chief executive David Zaslav will lead the proposed new company, which will comprise one of Hollywood s most powerful studios, including the Harry Potter and Batman franchises, news network CNN, sports programming and Discovery s unscripted home, cooking and nature and science shows.
Shares in Discovery climbed about 16 per cent to $41.3 in premarket trade but fell 2 per cent afterward as investors digested that it would take time for Discovery to scale up in streaming, said Rich Greenfield, partner at LightShed Partners. ....
