Black Cat Farm and Bistro Wins Boulder Business of the Year Award

Some restaurants serve food grown on local farms. Eric and Jill Skokan moved their restaurant, Black Cat Bistro, to their own farm at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Some restaurants compost. The Skokans are using compost to help heat the dining cabanas that have kept guests at their farm cozy all winter.
These are just a few of the things that the Skokans have accomplished over the past year that recently earned Black Cat the Virginia Patterson Business of the Year award from the Boulder Chamber. Just about the only thing they haven t done is reopen the dining rooms of Black Cat Bistro and its sibling, Bramble & Hare, both on the Pearl Street Mall in downtown Boulder. But that could happen soon, too. ....

The L Becomes One of the Few New Denver Bars to Open During the Pandemic

Bars offer a form of intimacy: You re shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow drinkers, face-to-face with your bartender and only a few feet from the source of your next drink. Conversation and camaraderie flow like beer from the tap, and toasts among strangers (if there is such a thing as a stranger at your favorite watering hole) are common whether to celebrate, commiserate or just knock back another shot.
But bars have suffered greatly during the pandemic. Most bar stools have been eliminated, leaving customers scattered around what little table seating can be found, and those saloons that haven t figured out some form of food service have had to close entirely because of COVID-related restrictions. Many watering holes throughout Denver remain in a state of limbo, either hibernating for the winter, trying to make a go of it with takeout booze sales or offering only occasional special events until capacity restrictions ease enough to make reopening worthwhile. ....

Pete's Satire Lounge Will Reopen After Eleven Months Closed

Over the past eleven months, Colfax Avenue just hasn t been the same without the glowing sign of Pete s Satire Lounge advertising Mixed Drinks. The pandemic closed the legendary watering hole last March (along with every other bar and dining room in the state), but unlike other spots that reopened at the end of May, the Satire remained shuttered. But now the Contos family, which has operated the bar at 1920 East Colfax Avenue for nearly sixty years, plans to reopen Pete s Satire Lounge on Friday, February 19.
When restaurateur Pete Contos took over this spot in 1962, the Satire was already on its way to legendary status, having hosted performances by the Smothers Brothers and Bob Dylan two years before, when Walt Conley was booking the joint. From there, Contos launched a string of other Pete s eateries, including Pete s Kitchen next door. Contos passed away in 2019, but his family, including grandson Alex Barakos, still runs the restaurant and bar empire. And the time is ....

Quesabirria and Birria Ramen Hit Denver's Food Truck Scene

Wait ramen noodles!?
You read that right: The latest food trend driven in part by social media photos is a style of birria that originated in Tijuana, Mexico; found fame on the streets of Los Angeles, and has since spread all over the U.S. Part of the fun is the massive amount of cheese that glues birria tacos, quesadillas and tortas together; the other part comes from the irreverent addition of ramen noodles to form a fusion that hasn t fueled so much furor since Roy Choi gobsmacked the City of Angels with Korean tacos back in 2008.
