Theater Notebook: San Diego Musical Theatre, Welk and OnStage Playhouse announce return of live shows

San Diego Musical Theatre will get back to live entertainment at the Horton Grand Theatre in August with four weekends of concert dates by musical tribute acts from around the country.
“Piano Men: Generations” will take place Aug. 6 and 7. Father-and-son pianist-singers Terry and Nick Davies perform a tribute show chronicling four decades of music by Billy Joel and Elton John.
ABBAFAB, a tribute act to the 1970s- 80s Swedish pop act ABBA, will play Aug. 13 and 14. “Not Fade Away: Rock ‘n’ Roll Reignited,” a tribute act that features Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, runs Aug. 20 and 21. And “Britain’s Finest: The Complete Beatles Experience” will take place Aug. 27 and 28. ....

The Skirball Cultural Center partially reopens this weekend with “Ai Weiwei: Trace,” the artist’s portraits of imprisoned dissidents and free-speech advocates, all crafted with Lego bricks. It’s a smaller version of Ai’s installation for his unprecedented 2014 exhibition on Alcatraz, which Times critic Christopher Knight called “an always-poignant, often-powerful meditation on soul-deadening repressions of human thought and feeling.”

For this exhibit, artists Dennis Delgado, Alicia Henry, Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, Titus Kaphar, Whitfield Lovell, and Lava Thomas created unexpected and unconventional depictions of Black subjects through drawings, performance art, prints, sculptures, and digital art that challenge traditional methods of portraiture. All of the works will be available for viewing through a virtual tour, and all related performances and lectures will be prerecorded and shared through the college’s website.
