Mailliard Ranch, a 14,838-acre property in southern Mendocino County and the largest coast redwood forest left in private family hands. The $24.7 million project secures three conservation easements across the entire property, which safeguard the land from subdivision and development, regardless of future ownership. In addition to protecting sustainable working forests across nearly 14,000 acres, the easement protects nearly 1,000 acres of reserves, including old-growth coast redwoods, mature mixed-conifer forest and salmon-bearing streams. The Mailliard family will retain ownership of the property and continue their stewardship as they have since 1925. Mailliard Ranch, together with the surrounding protected lands, ensures habitat connectivity and watershed health, and contributes to fire resilience across more than 80,000 acres stretching from the Anderson Valley toward the Mendocino coast.

As the hereditary chief of the Kwakiutl First Nation, the forests and ocean waters off the north east coast of Vancouver Island are David Mungo Knox's sacred responsibility.
He's lived his life gathering fish for his community and restoring his great grandfather's totem poles. But recently Knox has begun to fear for the forests.
"There's active logging going on right now, taking our old growth out and leaving a big mess," said Knox. "When they put in the roads on the mountainside, and after they log, there is erosion and it causes landslides into salmon bearing rivers."

As one of the busiest and most popular Bay Area tourist attractions, Muir Woods National Monument is always crowded. But just like so many other local favorites, the famous redwood grove has been fairly peaceful amid the pandemic.

For park ranger Stephanie Weinstein, this has been a great time to appreciate her favorite spots as she roams the trails to do her job. She said one of the charms of the national monument is that it can look different depending on how the sun is streaming through the trees, how the breeze is drifting through the branches or how much rain the area has received lately.
