There’s a self-conscious artifice that needs to be embraced in order to fully enter the world of St. Vincent’s dark and compelling new album,
Daddy’s Home. In and of itself, this isn’t necessarily anything new: Annie Clark, the multi-hyphenated artist now six albums deep into her career under the St. Vincent moniker, has always had a chameleonic muse, adopting different personas and perspectives in her songwriting, most recently with the high-gloss, electronic-infused pop of 2017’s
Masseduction, where she sometimes sounded as though she were broadcasting from a near-future dystopia. But with this latest record, she’s gone the opposite direction, back into the past, to conjure a vision of a time she’s only known through music and stories the early ’70s in New York City. THE White Label Auction, in aid of The BRIT Trust, returns next Wednesday, May 5th, in the run up to The BRIT Awards on May 11th, with around 100 lots of rare, collectible ‘white-label’ test pressings set to go under the hammer.
The auction, first staged in October 2019, will be hosted live onsite/online for UK and international collectors – by the music memorabilia and vinyl records specialists, Omega Auctions – https://www.omegaauctions.co.uk/, from their Newton-Le-Willows (Greater Manchester) base.
The explosion in sales of vinyl in recent years has thrown up the interesting by-product of ‘white-label’ test pressings – so called because there is no sleeve/label artwork at this stage – which record labels produce ahead of the full release of a new album. ....

Architects and Maximo Park deliver another week on the UK Record Store Chart which mirrors the main chart rundown.
Architects have beaten Maximo Park to the top of the UK Record Store Chart on a week dominated by new releases.
Julien Baker, A Winged Victory For The Sullen and The White Stripes also debut inside the Top 5, whilst more new entries further back come from the likes of Stereolab, The Wedding Present and Alice Cooper.
It’s now nine years since The Official Charts Company launched this chart as vinyl sales surged during the last decade, a trend which continued in 2020 as the format grew for the 13th consecutive year. Architects claim their first Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart following an exceptionally close race for this week’s top spot which sees an all-new Top 5.
The Brighton metalcore band’s ninth album For Those That Wish To Exist finishes the week just 550 chart sales ahead of their closest competition, Maximo Park and their new record Nature Always Wins (2).
For Architects, it’s not only their first chart-topper, but first Top 10 album too; their previous peak was Number 15 with 2016’s All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us. ....
