Catholic groups create $2 million 'Francis Fund' for Americans in danger of eviction

Renters facing eviction this winter, as the coronavirus pandemic surges in nearly all states, could get a little help from two Catholic organizations, who launched “The Francis Fund” in an effort to provide relief.
Catholic Charities USA and the Felician Sisters of North America have each contributed $1 million to a new fund to benefit people “in extreme danger of losing their homes this month,” according to a press release. The money will be distributed by local Catholic Charities agencies throughout the United States. ....

Free food distribution events in New Ulm and Sleepy Eye Dec 19 and 20

The USDA Farmers to Families Food Box Program  will be at the Brown County Fairgrounds in New Ulm on Saturday, Dec. 19, starting at noon. The delivery truck will be carrying 25 pound boxes containing dairy products, meats, and fresh produce for those in need. 
Local sponsors include Catholic Charities USA, Diocese of New Ulm, Knights of Columbus, and the Brown County Fairgrounds. The Knights of Columbus will take the lead to aid in distribution and logistics. The Brown County Fairground board is donating the Fairground location as the distribution site and the New Ulm Police Department will aid in traffic control. ....

Biden DHS nominee has 'refreshing' meeting with faith groups about immigration, refugees


WASHINGTON (RNS) President-elect Joe Biden’s nominee to lead the Department of Homeland Security held a roundtable meeting with an array of faith groups on Friday (Dec. 18), a gathering participants described as “refreshing” and a shift away from the Trump administration’s combative relationship with religious organizations regarding immigration and refugee policy.
The long list of attendees huddled virtually with Alejandro Mayorkas, a Cuban American Sephardic Jew and former refugee Biden has tapped as his DHS nominee.
A Biden transition official noted there was significant energy at the meeting created by Biden’s promise to overturn President Donald Trump’s travel ban, which advocates characterize as a “Muslim ban.” They also discussed laws and regulations governing asylum claims. ....

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 18, 2020 /PRNewswire/  As thousands of families face eviction by the end of December, Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) and the Felician Sisters of North America joined forces to create the CCUSA Francis Fund for Eviction Prevention.   Each organization contributed $1 million to seed the emergency fund.
