SIR – There may be benefits to both employers and employees of spending fewer days in the office (report, May 11), but what about customers?
I have had odd phone calls with people working from home. One had to put me on hold to deal with her dog, which was barking so loudly we couldn’t hear each other. A second apologised for the crunching noises, explaining he was eating toast while finding my details on the computer. A third failed to make promised return calls and couldn’t understand simple details – the slurred speech was what really concerned me. ....

The party suffered damaging losses in Thursday’s elections, particularly in Oldham and Stockport, but held firm in Liverpool, Manchester and Salford and even managed to increase its majority in Sefton.
Fielding out 
Oldham’s leader was usurped in Failsworth West by Failsworth Independent Party candidate Mark Wilkinson by a margin of fewer than 200 votes and, while Labour still holds a majority in Oldham, the party will now have to choose a new leader from its ranks. 
Said Fielding: “While tonight is obviously disappointing, the electorate of Failsworth West has spoken.” 
He added that he had been “saddened by the tone of the campaign both politically and personally”, but was proud of what he had achieved in his nine years as a councillor and three years as leader.  ....

MORE than 80 new homes will be built near a busy Somerset truck stop after councillors voted to approve amended plans – without any discussion.
David Wilson Homes applied for permission in January to build the homes north of the Nunney Catch services near Frome, just off a busy roundabout on the A361.
Mendip District Council granted permission for the homes off Green Pits Lane in July – only for the plans to be changed to amend emergency access to the site and allow gas storage tanks to be included. ....
