Stock indexes are closing higher Wednesday after the Federal Reserve said it expects its key interest rate to remain near zero through 2023.
The central bank’s commitment to keeping rates at rock bottom lows comes even as it forecasts the economy will accelerate this year. Wall Street has been anxious about the potential for higher inflation and has been looking for signs that the central bank shares investors’ concerns.
The S&P 500 index finished 0.3% higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.6% and the technology-heavy Nasdaq gained 0.4%. The 10-year Treasury yield hit 1.65%, the highest since January 2020. ....

GOLD PRICES retreated from new 2-week highs at $1740 in London on Wednesday, dropping $10 per ounce as government bond prices fell around the world, edging long-term interest rates higher ahead of today s monetary policy statement and forecasts from the Federal Reserve.

Commodities also fell, down 0.3% on Bloomberg s index, and global stock markets slipped after failing Tuesday to take out the record-high closing level on the MSCI World Index hit 1 month ago.

U.S. Treasury has mailed out 150,000 paper checks, made 90 million direct deposits

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Treasury on Wednesday said it has sent 90 million direct payments worth about $242 billion to Americans from President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package, with more payments to be distributed in coming weeks.
Most of the payments were sent by direct deposit to recipients’ bank accounts starting on Friday, the Treasury said in a statement, adding that the first payment batches were now fully available to be spent.
The Treasury said it also mailed out 150,000 paper checks worth $442 million. ....
