Für die Inszenierung des Märchendramas setzte Matthew Wild auf realistische Szenebilder, die keine märchenhafte Illusion zuließen und den Stoff damit noch zusätzlich gegenwärtig und vertraut erscheinen ließen. Denn die erzählte Geschichte kennt man und kennt man zugleich nicht. Das Libretto von Humperdinck nach der märchenhaften Geschichte von Ernst Rosmer verarbeitet nämlich in eklektischer Weise zahlreiche bekannte Märchenmotive, in denen eine böse Hexe, dunkle verwunschene Wälder, Könige, Liebe und natürlich Zaubersprüche eine wichtige Rolle spielen. ....
