Domestic abuse victims await family justice center – North Carolina Lawyers Weekly

Domestic abuse victims await family justice center
CHARLOTTE (AP) — Audra Toussaint knows the Mecklenburg County Courthouse so well she could give tours. But she didn’t come to know the courthouse as a lawyer or a judge or even as a bailiff.
She came to know the courthouse as a survivor of domestic abuse.
In the past seven years, 52-year-old Toussaint has taught herself to navigate the ins and outs of the legal system to keep herself and her daughter safe from her abuser. She’s renewed a restraining order against her abuser multiple times, filed motions on her own and appeared before a magistrate at least 10 times. She’s even picked up on the temperament of some of the judges.

Violence thrives in silence: COVID-19 isolation leads to increase of severity in domestic violence

For some, however, home is the worst place they could be.
Where to get help
Victims of domestic violence in need of help may contact Meg's House at 888-847-3915. The number for the National Domestic Abuse Hotline is 800-799-SAFE(7233). You may also visit the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault's website at sccadvasa.org.
As COVID-19 raged across the U.S., leaving schools and businesses shuttered, and millions ordered to stay home, another pandemic started to rage as people were stuck at home and unemployment soared: domestic violence.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men have experienced domestic violence.

High schooler uses artwork to highlight teen domestic violence

Layla Davis is using her skills to shine a light on domestic violence among teenagers.
Author: Eleanor Tabone (WLTX)
Updated: 11:14 PM EST March 4, 2021
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Teen domestic violence is not a light topic. Layla Davis understands that, so to help spark those conversations and promote change among teens, she created a piece which captures that emotion and pain.
The theme is "What It Means to be a Man." Layla explains her piece as "a depiction of societal pressures, not allowing men to talk about their feelings ... A woman talking into his ear, whispering all these pressures, then there was a gun shot coming out the other side."

Kristen Graziano, South Carolina's first female sheriff, is calling the state's antiabortion bill 'absolute insanity'

Jan. 30, 2021
Mere weeks into her tenure, South Carolina’s first elected female sheriff, Kristin Graziano, has made clear that she is not one to back down from a fight. Especially not against the state’s male-dominated legislature.
On Wednesday night, Graziano, who is also South Carolina’s first openly gay sheriff, publicly challenged a new amendment to an abortion bill widely expected to pass the state legislature and be signed into law in the next few weeks. The amendment would
outlaw most abortions, but provides an exception for survivors of rape and incest. In these cases, however, health-care providers would be required to report the name of the victim to police.

LGBTQ North Carolinians eligible for domestic violence protections following court ruling

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A new Court of Appeals ruling would allow LGBTQ North Carolinians to get domestic violence protections under state law.
In fact, North Carolina was the last state in the country to deny domestic violence protections to those in same-sex relationships. The Thursday ruling named the current guidelines unconstitutional in a divided 2-1 decision.
The Court ruling stemmed from the Wake County M.E. v. T.J. case back in 2018. M.E was a survivor of domestic violence who was denied a protective order because she was in a same-sex relationship.
In the opinion of the court, Democrat Chief Judge Linda McGee wrote, "By telling Plaintiff that her existence is not as valuable as that of individuals who engage in "opposite-sex" relationships, the State is not just needlessly endangering Plaintiff, it is expressing State-sanctioned animus toward her."
