Installation of small-cell wireless facilities in city rights of way continued to be a focus of the Edmonds City Council Tuesday night as councilmembers held a second round of discussions on the topic. At issue is a master permit application submitted by New Cingular Wireless to install such facilities, which has raised concerns among some councilmembers and residents.
Councilmembers Tuesday night focused on two issues: the possible health effects of the radio frequency (RF) emitted by any future 5G systems installed, and the aesthetic impact if numerous small-cell facilities were installed close together in the city.

Councillor slams 'hare-brained' plan to pedestrianise Merrion Row in Dublin

The plan to pedestrianise Merrion Row in Dublin City Centre this summer is “hare-brained” and “not going to happen,” according to councillor Mannix Flynn.
The Sunday Times reports that the council has agreed to pedestrianise Merrion Row, Mary Street and part of Capel Street in a bid to entice people back into town as restrictions are eased.
Following the success of last summer’s
pedestrianisation of five streets in the Grafton area, there are also calls for a range of other streets in the city to go car-free as the country reopens.
It follows the news that 17 streets in Cork will be permanently pedestrianised to help breathe life back into the city.

New Nikwasi Mound Plans Focus On Early Cherokee Agriculture

Reporter Lilly Knoepp talks with Nikwasi Initiative Director Elaine Eisenbraun about the next stage of plans for the areas around the Nikwasi Mound in Franklin. The Initiative secured the deed to the mound in 2019. Now Eisenbraun says the agriculture of the early Cherokee will be celebrated at the site.
The nonprofit that took control of the sacred Nikwasi Mound in Franklin two years ago is releasing more details about its plans for the site.
The Nikwasi Initiative is made up of representatives from Macon County, the town of Franklin, Eastern Band of Cherokee(EBCI) and Mainspring Conservation Trust.
Elaine Eisenbraun is its new director. She recently updated the Macon County Commissioners and the Franklin Town Council that the initiative wants to focus on the agricultural history of the site.

A native of Philadelphia, Emily Lin moved to Merced in 2003 to join a team of founding librarians building the twenty-first century research library at the University of California, Merced, and to manage an Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant to digitize art collections from the Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture in Hanford, CA. That project, “Opening the Cultural Corridor,” laid the groundwork for the library’s collaborations with other partners to digitize significant research collections for broader access. Recent partnerships include a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to digitize over 160,000 pages from the archives of UCSF Library, SFPL, and GLBT Historical Society documenting the Bay Area’s response to the AIDS epidemic; digitizing historic reports and photographs from Yosemite National Park; and a National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) Major Initiatives grant to archive and digitize the records of UC Cooperative Extension. As the Head of Digital Curation and Scholarship, she also works with faculty, students, and colleagues at the California Digital Library to ensure the research products of UC Merced are archived and accessible well into the future.
