44 San Francisco schools honoring Washington, Lincoln and others to be renamed, board slammed for 'crazy cancel culture'

The San Francisco school board has drawn flak for voting to strike the names of historical figures like George Washington, Thomas Jefferseon and Abraham Lincoln from the district’s schools. According to multiple reports, the board, in a 6-1 vote, deemed the former presidents as those having ties to racism or dishonorable legacies and it will now see 44 San Francisco Unified School District schools changing their names.
While Washington and Jefferson were slave owners, Lincoln courted controversy despite ending slavery as critics accused him of oppressing indigenous people. The School Names Panel recommended the renaming in a meeting held last November. ....

Iris Abigail Chacon Flores, who left El Salvador to escape violence, said she will never forget what she felt when she turned herself in to immigration authorities. Chacon Flores said her feet were shackled, her hands shackled. She said what surprised her the most were the shackles placed around her stomach. She was five months pregnant.
“I felt it wasn’t me they were chaining up, but my baby who was the one getting chained up, before it was even born into the world. I felt morally damaged, psychologically, when I was chained up in that manner,” Flores Chacon said. ....

Opposition to plans for a temporary encampment for immigrants without documentation at Camp Pendleton was strong at a community forum in Fallbrook held last Saturday.
Ricardo Favela, a spokesperson for the Fallbrook Human Rights Committee and one of the organizers of the community forum, said when he first heard the news about the potential encampments back in June, he found it “alarming.”
“Because first of all, we are talking about refugees which include people that have the right to ask for asylum. They are not committing a crime. It’s their right. There is no reason why there should be these centers of detention,” Favela said. ....

California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday appointed California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to fill the senate seat of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris through 2022.
His appointment will make him the Golden State’s first Latino senator.
In what initially appeared to be a check-in video call, Newsom and Padilla briefly talked about their children and Padilla’s immigrant parents before the governor surprised Padilla with what he called “the official ask.”
