Aesthetica Magazine - Space for Experimentation

Space for Experimentation
Around the time that the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) was established, John Baldessari, the school’s chair of “Post-Studio” practice, jotted down a set of notes outlining his ideal art college: “A watering hole, a flow of artists. Artists as ordinary people. Have artists as models. Create an environment where art can happen.”
Adapting his phrasing,
Where Art Might Happen: The Early Years of CalArts offers a bountiful history of the school’s formative decade, a companion to the eponymous 2019 exhibition at the Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover. This volume partly aims to redress imbalances in previous critical coverage of CalArts, highlighting work by lesser-known figures and focusing on the legendary but long understudied Feminist Art Program.

Manor School and Middle School Artwork on Display at Mendon Public Library

Ever wonder what 2nd graders can paint when they learn about farm landscapes and rural communities? Or, perhaps you’d like to see what 4th graders are inspired to create after learning about MC Escher and Dr. Seuss? What 5th graders can observe and draw when they look at bubbles, attempting to capture their iridescence with bright colors and shadows is truly inspiring. And, middle school black and white Sharpie drawings are positively gorgeous.
Come to the Mendon Public Library to enjoy a sampling of HFL Manor School and Middle School Artwork. Currently on display through May 22, 2021, the artwork represents just some of the fine creative work of local students.

University dance students premiere new filmed works online
Updated 8:46 AM;
In locations as vast as an open field and as intimate as a slant-roofed attic, new dance works by students choreographed specifically for film will premiere online in the Lewis Center for the Arts’ Program in Dance “Spring Dance Festival - April,” 8 p.m. on Friday, April 30.
The free program on Zoom will showcase the independent thesis works of seniors Sophie Blue, Liam Lynch and Enver Ramadini. Each conceived and choreographed pieces for presentation via video in a virtual environment, “exploring the translation of movement specifically for the camera“:

SheLovesCollective Presents 'My Relic' Art Installation on Artsakh Ave. Storefronts

My Relic: “Breaking Bread” by SheLovesCollective
GLENDALE—As part of Armenian Genocide Remembrance Month, emergent international collective of established female artivists, SheLovesCollective, has created an interactive art installation called “My Relic.” This installation intends to activate our community to transform their relics of genocide into broadly construed creative objects and outlets for the collective mourning of trauma through transformation. “My Relic” will take place within 3 retail units on Artsakh Ave., located at 117 Artsakh Ave., 123 Artsakh Ave., and 127 Artsakh Ave., from April 11 to 25, and will feature 3 individual installations including:
“A Ritual in Bread Making” (117 N. Artsakh Ave.) will invite Armenian bakers and chefs to use Lavash, the traditional Armenian oven baked bread, to create items that make up a typical room in a home. Lavash activates a cultural and biological reality in many Armenians, as food is one of the most important human memories. Abstract bread is often a symbol for hunger, starvation, or a hunger for change. Additionally, a short documentary film will be either projected in large format wall-to wall/ceiling-to-floor or played on a variety of vintage television screens of varying sizes. The short film will be of a healing ritual performed by collective members and footage from two previous performance art documentaries.

Nueces Country Record Star
Pandemics and winter storms can’t stop the Del Mar College (DMC) Art and Drama Department from curating the annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show. A juried exhibit that attracts entries created by artists from all over the United States and features two- and three-dimensional works, the show marks its 55th year of bringing exceptional artwork to the Coastal Bend.
The juried exhibit features 58 works selected from 612 entries submitted from across the country.
The national show also attracts jurors who are nationally or internationally known artists themselves. This year’s juror is Robbie Barber, Professor of Sculpture with the Art and History Department at Baylor University, who has exhibited his own work across the country and even in Japan.
